People when started to write in their own blogs about their hometowns or home cities. they don’t want to talk about the bad things, or explained in other words: talking about the things that will worry you. One of the reasons could be: they want you to continue reading, or follow their site or maybe they are ashamed to expose the dark side (I’m a big fan of Stars Wars). However, I like to take risk, and I prefer to write the shady side of my city at the beginning of this post, so you will think first if you are willing to arrive to my city knowing all the things you will face it in some point or maybe never during your visit. I’m not a witch, I can’t predict the future and being 100% sure that you will have an awesome experience or a bad experience. If you are in doubt, Read 5 Reasons why I love Guayaquil.
Defending my city, I will say the follow: Don’t listen to what they say. Go and experience it for yourself….. #ExploreMyCity.
1 Crime in Guayaquil
Like every city in Latin America you will find thieves, and I guess most of you will say that is in the touristic places, but I have been in almost all the touristic places and I was ok all the time, no one try to stole my wallet or my purse or my cellphone or I felt in danger all the time.
My big recommendation is to be aware of the multitude. If you know in advance that you are going to a crowed place, please don’t go with all your personal belongings, just go with the necessary ones (example: watch, wallet with few dollars, your cellphone, and your camera) and try that everything fit in one small bag easy to carry in front of you. Don’t use the small pockets of your bag to put your important stuff or in your pants pocket. These are easy places where robbers can steal you and you won’t notice.
Other suggestion when you are traveling in a car or you are using a taxi avoid drive with your windows down. Now you can find in Guayaquil more car circulation than in previous years and the thieves take advantage when you are stuck in the traffic to rob you, in my experience is less probable that someone steal your stuff when your windows and your car is lock.
I don’t like to advice this but in case you are facing a situation where you can’t escape and the thief has a gun or a knife or something that could hurt you, please try to not resist. Most of the time they are influencing by the consumption of drugs and they could kill you. I know is your stuffs but you know that you could save money and buy it again. But no one will return your life.
Again, I will repeat not all the tourist and even the people from Guayaquil face this kind of bad experience. Guayaquil is not a place where you will find in every corner or street a thief. I’m just telling you all the situations you could be involve and how you will prevent to avoid it.
2 Best time to visit Guayaquil

I have great newsflash for you!!! The best time to come to Guayaquil is all year round, because of our amazing weather. You can visit my previous page: 5 reasons why I love Guayaquil. Yet I’m 100% sure not all of you can handle our crazy hot and humid climate (40C / 104F). The finest months to visit, this is for the people doesn’t like a hot weather, come from June to November.
3 Where to get cheap Flight tickets

Most of you will ask how much will cost a flight to Ecuador, it is cheap or expensive? But to answer this question first you need to tell when you want to visit us because as all of you know there is high season and low season. Like December is always a high season in every country and the flight tickets will be extremely expensive. I’m not 100% sure (I like to be always honest) but per my parents, they always have their best months to travel to everywhere. According to them it always works to travel between March – April or September - October.
After you decided the day and month you will come to Ecuador, I need to tell you that you have two options arrived first to Guayaquil and from there start the adventure to visit the coast, highlands, and rainforest. Or the other one is to arrive in Quito and started your visit in the highland and then go to the rainforest and finally to the coast.

The best webpage and the one I’m in love with is Expedia, where you can find the best deals and even promos with affordable flight + accommodation. Sometimes when I couldn’t find something that convince me, I go directly to the flight company: LAN, AVIANCA, COPA, AeroMexico and KLM (these companies have regular’s flights to Guayaquil or Quito).
It is up to you where you will arrive at the beginning of your journey. You are the one in charge and know exactly what you really want. In case you want some help, don’t hesitate to contact me, it will be my pleasure to help you with an itinerary or give you some advice. If you need a touristic guide during your visit, I will mention my friend @ven_ec. She is the best in this business and she love what she does. Therefore, go and follow her to know more places and see how excited her costumers were with the experience to know more about my beautiful city.
4 How to find the best accommodation
Guayaquil has different types of hotels, hostels, apartments or even houses that you can rent for a couple of days or weeks. The price varies from $15 per night in a hostel to $300 per night in an expensive hotel. Good news is most of the hostels and hotel included the breakfast in their price. At least you will not worry where to eat and the extra cost that it represents. My first reference is to use Bookings (I know I love this website) however in case you don’t like bookings and prefer Airbnb, it will be fine too. Click here and you will get access to a $20 Travel Credit.
I identify that most of my readers likes the offers or if there are special discounts, that’s why I’m adding above some of them. I can help you with this little advice: try to stay in a central place where it will be easy for you to take, any transportation: like a cab, metrovía or bus.
5 Food - HUECAS
How affordable is to eat in Guayaquil? I like my city because you can find any type of food. There are expensive restaurants but you will find food trucks where a meal could cost you less than $10. The first thing in your mind: are you crazy? Let me explain you better. There are some “huecas” (slang for tiny places or trucks where they serve typical or fast food).
I’m not an expert. I spent almost 6 year away home, so every time I came to Guayaquil I definitely ate my momma’s food. I know it sounds like I’m mama little girl, but I guessed most of you missed a well-cooked meal made it by their moms. Therefore, I asked to my little brother to help me, because he is a professional in knowing all the best huecas in Guayaquil. He gave me his own list of the best huecas in Guayaquil. To be honest I haven’t try all of them, but after all the holidays and celebrations I will go to this places. Good news, all these restaurants have Facebook page, click on the name and you will go directly to their own page:
Sabrosón their specialty is the pork sandwich, this Hueca is the oldest and now you can find in different spots in Guayaquil.
Las Menestras El Vecino the rice, beans, and meat you can eat in Guayaquil.
